English I Root Words -- List 1

 

You will need to know the root and the word for the quiz next week. 

 

1. ACT – dotransact (verb): to carry on or conduct (business or negotiations) to a conclusion or settlement

 

    1. Example: He refused to transact with anyone other than the CEO of the company.

 

2. ALT – high

 

altitude (noun): extent or distance upward; height

    1. Example: My degree of nausea increases as the altitude of a plane increases.

 

3. AMBUL – walk/go

 

ambulatory (adjective): pertaining to walking; moving about from place to place

    1. Example: We decided to go on an ambulatory tour of the city.

    2. Example: The National Geographic special was on an ambulatory tribe of natives.

 

4. ANDR – man

 

androgynous (adjective): neither clearly masculine nor clearly feminine in appearance

    1. Example: Many rock stars have an androgynous appearance.

 

5. ANTHR – man

 

anthropology (noun): the study of the nature and essence of mankind

inanimate (adjective): lifeless, not animate

7. ART – skill

8. AUD – hear

 

inaudible (adjective): not heard or capable of being heard

    1. Example: There are many sounds that dogs can hear that are inaudible to humans.

 

9. BELLI – war

 

belligerent (adjective): aggressively hostile; given to waging war

    1. Example: The belligerent customer argued with the store’s manager, causing quite the scene.

 

10. BIBLIO – book
