Day 36 – Grammar Rules Tested by Sense Questions

-Logic

-Make sure transitions in the passage make sense.

-Because of its basis in fact, Robinson Crusoe is often regarded as the first major novel in English literature.

-The transition doesn’t make sense with the info that follows.

-Verb Usage

-Make sure verbs match their subject and the tense of the surrounding context.

-In Crusoe, which has been published in 1719…

-The publication took place in the past, therefore the verb should reflect that – should be “had been published”.

Day 37 – 10 Algebra and Coordinate Geometry Questions

1.Solve a quadratic equation.

     If x2 + 12 = 7x, what are the two possible values of x?

2.Solve a system of equations.

     If 4x + 3y = 8, and x + y = 3, what is the value of x?

3.Solve an inequality.

     What are all the values of x for which -5x + 7 < -3?

4.Find the distance between two points in the (x, y) coordinate plane.

What is the distance between the points with (x, y) coordinates        (-2, 2) and (1, -2)?

5.Find the slope of a line from its equation.

What is the slope of the line with the equation 2x + 3y = 4?

Day 38 – 5 Steps for ACT Reading

Step 5: Match your Answer with One of the Choices

-You should have an answer in your head already based on the question.

-Match your answer to one of the answer choices.

-Avoid trying to see if they “look right”.

-Don’t think very hard about the choices if you can help it – they are intended to confuse you.

Day 39 – Reading Tables and Graphs

Do the following:

     -Determine what is being represented.

-Determine what the axes (or columns and rows) represent.

-Take note of units of measurement.

-Look for trends in the data.

Day 40 – 4-Step Method for the Essay

Step 4: Proofread

-Leave 2-3 minutes to review your work

     -Don’t hesitate to make corrections

-Use a SINGLE line through deletions and an asterisk (*) to mark where something should be added

-You don’t have time to revise substantially

-Graders are reading your essay as a first draft, not as a final draft
