Day 26 – Grammar Rules Tested by Sense Questions 

-Completeness

     -Every sentence should consist of an entire thought

     -Don’t leave thoughts hanging on the ACT

-Sentence Structure

     -This can address fragments and run-ons, neither of which are grammatically correct

     -Fragments and run-ons appear frequently on the ACT

     -Make sure all of the sentences in a passage contain at least one, but not more than none, complete thought.

 

Day 27 – To Calculate or Not to Calculate 

You CAN use a calculator, but you don’t NEED to

A calculator can COST time if you overuse it

Think carefully about each question and decide whether a calculator will make it easier or more time-consuming

Practice with the calculator you will use on test day ahead of time so that you are comfortable with it

 

 

Day 28 – 5 Steps for ACT Reading  

Step 3: Refer to the Passage

-You don’t have to completely reread the passage

-Refer to the passage by finding the place where the answer to a question can be found

-Your chosen answer should match the passage in meaning (not necessarily word-for-word)

 

Day 29 – 5 Steps for ACT Science 

Step 4: Answer the Question in your Own Words

-The answers are there in the passage

-Don’t rely too much on your own knowledge of science

-Think of paraphrasing the info in the passage

 

Day 30 – 4-Step Method for the Essay 

Step 2: Plan

     -Take no more than 5 minutes to plan

     -Subject matter

          -Avoid highly emotional examples that will reduce clarity

          -An abundance of undeveloped examples makes weak essays

     -Controlled brainstorming

          -Stay focused on coming up with workable examples and arguments as quickly as possible

     -Information banks

          -Before the test, refresh your memory about books, school subjects, historical events, personal experiences, etc.

     -Structure your essay

          -Use an effective hook to bring the reader in

          -Use regular transitions

          -End with a bang to make your essay memorable – a closing that ties the paragraphs together
