ACT Notes and Practice Group 1

Below you will find all the notes for the first group of ACT practice. At the end of each day's notes, you will find a link to the activity for that day. If you are absent from class, you can either print out the notes, or copy them. You do not need to print the activity, just write down your answers on the same page as your notes.

 

Day 1 Notes

ACT Daily Warm-Ups

  • At the beginning of each class period, you will have a small amount of ACT notes to take and an ACT activity to complete.
  • Every 5 days you will get a quiz grade for the ACT warm-ups: 10 points each day for the notes, 10 points each day for the activity.
  • You will STILL be responsible for notes and activities on the days you are completely absent from the class, because you can access them on the class website.
  • These will be collected DAILY.
  • NO late grades will be awarded for daily warm-ups.

Overview of the ACT

  • About 3 ½ hours long (with the Writing portion)
  • Short break between 2nd and 3rd sections
  • Consists of a total of 215 scored multiple-choice questions and 1 essay
  • Comprised of four subject tests and a writing test:
    • English
    • Math
    • Reading
    • Science
    • Writing

The English Test

  • 45 minutes, 75 questions
  • 30 seconds per question
  • 5 passages with about 15 questions per passage
  • NOT tested on spelling and vocabulary
  • Tests understanding of the conventions of English – punctuation, grammar, sentence structure – and rhetorical skills – organizing the text and analyzing style
  • 1/3 of the questions test ability to write concisely
  • 1/3 of the questions test for logic and sense
  • 1/3 of the questions test rules of grammar

Day 2 Notes

The Math Test

  • 60 minutes, 60 questions
  • 1 minute per question
  • All multiple-choice format
  • 5 answer choices for each question
  • Cover the following topics:
    • Prealgebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra
    • Coordinate geometry, plane geometry
    • A little trigonometry
  • 1/3 of the questions either give a diagram or describe a situation that should be diagrammed
  • 1/3 of the questions are story problems
  • 1/3 of the questions require you to demonstrate your knowledge of math concepts

Day 3 Notes

The Reading Test

  • 35 minutes, 40 questions
  • 4 passages with 10 questions each
  • 4 categories of reading passages:
    • Social studies
    • Natural sciences
    • Humanities
    • Prose fiction
  • 3 different categories of reading questions
    • Specific detail questions
    • Inference questions
    • Big picture questions

Reading Test 1

 

Day 4 Notes

The Science Test

  • 35 minutes long, 40 questions
  • 7 passages w/ 5-7 questions each
  • Scientific knowledge NOT tested – common sense and ability to understand info presented IS tested
  • Some passages are VERY difficult to understand but are balanced with easy questions
  • 1/3 of the questions ask you to analyze data
  • 1/3 of the questions require you to understand the way experiments are designed and what they prove
  • 1/3 of the questions require you either to logically apply a principle or to identify ways of defending or attacking a principle

Science Test 1

 

Day 5 Notes

The Writing Test

  • 30 minutes long with one essay question
  • Expected to take a position on a topic
  • Not primarily concerned with grammar and punctuation
  • Coming up with a plan and sticking to it are key to success
  • Content is not relevant – graders are not checking facts and graders will not judge on your opinion
